Why Didn't This Exist When I Was In College??

I'm feeling a bit cheated over here.

When I was in college, I went through the same thing every semester: I waited in line at the too-small bookstore in order to pay far too much for books that the professor decided we didn't really need only to return them at the end of the semester for far less than I paid three months earlier.

I'm exhausted just thinking about it.

Imagine my surprise when I came across this website.   CampusBookRentals is a website that allows you to rent textbooks at far less than you pay at the campus bookstore.  Far less than I ever paid.  And, because I like to be a thorough blogger, I did some sleuthing:

We live next to a huge campus town.  So, I got online and found some syllabi for some classes, including the textbooks required for them.  And I compared the prices.

Holy to the moly.  I can't believe how much money I've wasted.

I found a Business Communication textbook, a pretty general one that is used for a lot of different business classes.  At the college bookstore, a used copy will run your average starving student $96.65.  Remembering what I paid in college for a similar text, I wasn't terribly surprised at that price.

Renting the same book from CampusBookRentals?  $34.15 for the entire semester.  Need it for just the quarter?  It's $31.08.

Now, because I'm a diligent shopper and blogger, I called the local campus bookstore to find out what they pay when you sell the book back.  That copy, in good condition of course, will garner you $31.00 back.  Without getting out a chart and an easel, I'll just tell you that that saves you just about 50%.  ON ONE BOOK.

Oh, and the shipping is free. BOTH WAYS.  And if you drop a class?  There is a 30-day risk-free window... if you return the book within the first 30 days, your order is refunded 100%.  They also donate to Operation Smile with each textbook rented from the site.  Awesome.

I know that a lot of you are sending kids to college this fall... I'm begging you, save the money where you can!  Head over to and see how much money you will save.  And, you won't have to wait in a ridiculously long line in the bookstore while your child tries to convince you they need an overpriced sweatshirt and the matching hat.

Still have questions?  Check out this video and have yourself a chuckle on me.

  1. College is still many years in the future for us but this is an incredible deal. I wonder what these college students will spend there savings on...

I love all the comments I get from you! Because of an insane amount of spam, I had to turn off anonymous commenting but I'd love it if you'd comment anyway!
