I found the idea at the Polka Dot Chair blog... I know what you're thinking, but her blog is about more than polka dot chairs. At any rate, she had a great little post about a runner for halloween using burlap and I hopped on it like a frog on a lily pad.
Go buy some burlap... IT'S REALLY CHEAP. I didn't know how cheap it was before doing this project. I had never used burlap before now. You can go ahead and weep for my misspent crafting youth. At any rate, I bought a yard of burlap, which was enough to fit my redone side table. I also bought some black fuzzy trim for the ends, also super cheap. I cut the burlap to the width I wanted, adding an inch or so to each side for good measure. I ironed it and got to work.
I used my Silhouette to cut out some stencil shapes onto freezer paper. Freezer paper is a miracle of crafting... cut out a stencil on it, iron it to your fabric shiny side down, and it stays until you take it off. AMAZING. For my spooky stencil, I found a graveyard shape and made it happen.
Once I did that, I used acrylic paint on the stenciled burlap. I used a piece of cardboard underneath because burlap is all hole-y.
Watch the miracle as I take off the freezer paper...
Did you hear angels singing? 'Cause they did.
I did the same stencil on the other side for symmetry... symmetry is very important. And I added some bats all over the place 'cause they're spooky too.
Once I had all my stenciling done, I added some lining to the back. I used a cheap sheet from Goodwill and used heat bond to attach it. I also hemmed the sides with the heat bond. Simple. The last part was adding the trim to the ends, which I did with some hot glue... NO SEWING ON THIS PROJECT AT ALL.
And then, just as quickly as it started, it was done.
I love it.... so simple and so cute. It's perfect for my little table!

ReplyDeleteI'm a fabric store employee, and cutting burlap makes my skin crawl (Yes, Karen Cooper, you can get burlap at most fabric stores). I usually HATE the idea of burlap as decor, but THIS is really cute. If I decorated for holidays, I would totally be making this!
