Ahem. Now that I've collected myself, I wanted to share a little project the hubs and I did recently to try and help keep the house a bit warmer.
These little jobbers are called 'foam gaskets' and I found them at Home Depot. From what I've read, they can cut down on the amount of outside air that comes through the outlets and switches on outside walls. Our house is old and we have draft issues for sure, so for under $3 a package, this was worth trying. They're easy to install:
You just take off the wall plate, stick 'em on, and replace the plate. Easy-peasy, as my four-year old would say. And do they work? Drumroll, please....
I have no idea. I mean, I can't tell much difference so far. When I put my hand over the outlets, the air flow is less, so I believe it's working. For the price, I'm willing to give it a go.

I bought those last week, but I still haven't looked for the screwdriver so I can do this. I did peel and stick insulation at the outside door. I'm amazed every time I walk by that there is no longer a cold draft. I don't know why it took me so long to do it. (Well, yeah, I do - put off, put off, put off.)
ReplyDeleteI just got up to feel around my outlets on on outside wall. They are definitely colder than the ones on inside walls, Maybe a little air coming in. But as I sit here at my desk, I have a draft coming up from somewhere on my legs. My desk goes to the floor and it feels a like a fan underneath it....making me a little crazy.
